Grand Master Son, Duk Sung became the second head of Chung Do Kwan after its founder Grand Master Lee, Won Kuk retired.

As a very powerful Martial Artist Grand Master Son was appointed as the Chief Instructor of the Republic of South Korea's army by the country's President Syngman Rhee.

In 1955 Members of the Government, Press and Military met with Son, Duk Sung, who was accompanied by Maj Gen Choi, Hong Hi and Capt Nam, Tae Hi to discuss creating a new name for their style of Korean Karate.

The name agreed upon was 'TAE KWON DO'.

* NB: Weapons were originally an integral part of Tae Kwon Do training.
